We’ve found there are 5 big things that families wish they could train their dog to do that would make for a more peaceful life together.  Raise your hand if you have experienced these same issues and wish there were solutions.

You wish your dog would:

  1. Walk nicely with no pulling
  2. Greet people politely on a walk
  3. Come to you the first time, when called
  4. Remain calm when the doorbell rings
  5. Stop barking, on cue

Looking for something to do with your dog today?  This weekend?  Next weekend?

Here are 5 fun things you can do with your dog this month!

  1. Build a snowman up north in Flagstaff
  2. Head to the nearest lake or beach (you will most likely be the only ones there!)
  3. Attend a local Dog Adoption Event
  4. Try a new outdoor class with AZ Dog Sports, such as Parkour or Scentwork
  5. Take your dog on a coffee date with you

Perfectly Polite Party Pup – 5 Things Your Dog Should Know

Are you anxious about having guests to your house this holiday season?  Not sure how your dog will react when the doorbell rings?  Or when you start serving food?

Grab a pen and paper, and take our quiz to find out where your dog fits on our Perfectly Polite Party Pup scale.

Rate each answer from 1 to 5, using this scale:

  1. My dog has no clue how to behave this way
  2. My dog knows how to behave this way, but refuses to do it
  3. My dog will sometimes behave this way
  4. My dog will most likely behave this way
  5. My dog always behaves this way

Here are the 5 main behaviors a Perfectly Polite Party Pup should exhibit in a perfect world:

  1. My dog will sit on a leash with me for a polite door greeting or will happily lie in his crate, when I open the door to guests.

  2. My dog will only bark to alert me that someone has arrived, but then quiets down once I have welcomed the guests in.

  3. My dog doesn’t jump on the furniture and allows guests to sit wherever they want, while my dog sits quietly in her place.

  4. My dog ignores food that has been placed on counters or tabletops around the house.

  5. My dog keeps his tongue and paws to himself while others are around.  All guests leave my house with clothing and shoes intact.

How did you and your pup do?

If your pup scored between:

21-25 • You and your pup get the GOLD STAR!  Keep up the good work and enjoy that holiday party!!

16-20 • You are your pup are doing a GREAT JOB! You might just want to get some extra focused practice in a few weeks before your party.

11-15 • It seems that your dog listens to his tummy over his manners more often than not.

6-10 • Oh boy, you might not enjoy your party very much.  Stop by and see us for some classes that could help take the worry away.

0-5 • You need our help!  Please call us before you find yourself eating a whole pumpkin pie under the table at your own party.

Can My Dog Tell When I am Stressed?

Can my dog tell what I am feeling before I actually feel it?

“What is it?”

“Why are you freaking out, Bailey?  It’s ok.”

Do you find yourself saying these things to your dog sometimes?  Have you ever wondered why your dog acts a certain way, seemingly out of the blue?  It is quite possibly because your dog is smarter than you think.

Recent studies have been done to test if a dog can smell our emotions.  Turns out, they can.  They not only react to our words, the way we tense our muscles or pull on the leash; they also react to certain smells that we emit when in stressful or emotional situations.  This might not be big news to any Service Dog parent or advocate out there, but it seems to go far beyond those dogs we think are deemed for service.

Once again, our good friends at Whole Dog Journal tell us HERE what happens to us when we are stressed and how our dogs can tell and react accordingly.  It’s a funny and informative read.

5 Fun New Sports To Try With Your Dog

Now that summer is over, we would like to introduce you to 5 fun new sports you can try with your dog!  Get yourself and your pup out doing something new this fall with AZ Dog Sports.

 Parkour (Pawkour)

    •  A fun outdoor class that focuses on teaching your dog how to use their body to stay fit and limber safely.  You and your pup will use the outdoor park environment like rocks, trees, curbs, benches, obstacles and other recreational resources and amenities to challenge your dog’s fitness and focus. You’ll learn about determining your dog’s fitness level, and how to add a dog-version of weight lifting and balance skills to your dogs workouts. This class is best suited for dogs that have decent loose leash skills and are non-reactive to other dogs being active.

Urban Canine CGC

    •  Urban CGC (Canine Good Citizen) is a multiple session class that incorporates the requirements of CGC but is taught outdoors; in crowds, buildings, stairs and elevators. Sessions are geared at building toward your test and AKC title.  All dogs must have CGC or CGCA certificate as a prerequisite.

Treibball

    •  Treibball is a new way to play with your dog! It’s a competitive sport for dogs of all ages and sizes–it promotes better teamwork and communication between a dog and his handler. It’s great fun for any energetic dog who works well off-leash and needs a job. Playing the game uses a combination of classic obedience and herding cues. Treibball promotes the same kind of teamwork and communication as agility, but does not put any physical stress on the handler. It also builds confidence for the shy dog, and helps reactive dogs with impulse control.

Outdoor Tracking & Scentwork

    • Tracking – In this American Kennel Club sanctioned sport, dogs use their powerful noses to follow a specific human scent along a path unknown to the handler.  Through a variety of fun exercises, you and your dog will start working short straight  tracks and, over time you will progress to longer tracks with multiple turns and distractions.
    • Scentwork – The activity and sport of scentwork is designed to develop your dogs’ natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise.  It’s a great way for your dog to have fun, build confidence and burn lots of mental and physical energy.  Open to all breeds, it is a great class for dogs of any age.  They will have an opportunity to build confidence in new environments and work around obstacles without the stress of interaction with other dogs.

Outdoor Agility

    •  This activity is the same as indoor agility but utilizing wider spaces and full-size regulation equipment. You will get lots of exercise while outdoors enjoying this activity with your dog. Whether you do it just for the exercise or you compete in agility, now is the perfect time to expand your horizons as a team.
