Calming Your Dog for the 4th of July

Planning a celebration for this 4th of July? Have you asked your pup what she wants? Fireworks? Loud Music? A quiet night at home with family?

Every year dogs run away or get out of the yard over the holiday because they get spooked by a noise they haven’t heard before.  Do you know your dogs’ triggers?  Do you know what scares him or how to calm him when he gets scared?

Check out some ways to help keep your pet safe and secure this 4th of July.

Create a Safe Space For Your Dog

• A quiet, place that your dog can retreat to, might make all the difference.
• If your dog is crate trained, that is the best space for her.
• If you have a room away from all the activity, set it up so your dog will not be able to escape.
• Tell your guests to avoid bothering the pup while he is in his safe place.  This will help to eliminate extra insecurities.

Mask the Noise

• Play calming music or white noise in the safe space you have created.
• If you are staying inside, play music or the TV so it will dull the noises coming from outside.
• If your dog is in her crate, put a blanket over the top to help drown out the noise.

You and Your Dog Should Stay Indoors

• Keep pets inside during fireworks, preferably in a crate.
• If you are outside enjoying the party, make sure your dog cannot escape to come out to get you.  Some dogs will hear the noise and want to run to you but might not be able to find you and get lost.
• Make sure all your guests are aware to not let the dog get near the door so an escape is less likely to happen.

Try a Calming Treat or Smell

• Make sure to reassure them and consider anxiety-reducing treats or supplements.
• There are plenty of Hemp, CBD or other natural calming treats for dogs on the market.
• Be sure to try the treats/oils or other products ahead of time in case you need to try a few to see what works for your dog.
