Do you find yourself away from home for long periods of time each day? Does your dog stay home alone? You may be busy at work during that time, not thinking of much else; but what do you think your dog is up to while you are gone?
It seems we are busier than ever nowadays, and our canine companions are left to deal with our absences. We have more things that are demanding our time away from home and our dogs have more time alone.
We know that leaving a dog alone for long periods of time can allow unwanted behaviors to surface. Would those behaviors stay dormant if we our pups were not forced to face their aloneness? Or are they behaviors that would show up no matter the circumstances?
These are questions that our professional trainers at AZ Dog Sports get all the time. Can you stop my dog from destroying the house when we leave? Can you stop my dog from barking and bothering the neighbors all day when I’m gone? Why can’t I get my dog to go potty outside when I get home after being gone all day?
In helping out our clients over the years, we have come to realize that the real question is; how long is too long to leave my dog alone? All dogs are different and so finding that sweet spot of alone time is crucial to alleviating bad behaviors.
Our friends at The Whole Dog Journal have recently published an article that helps to answer some of your questions and provides some solutions as well.
